Prerequisites

Collection of four photos of the same female skater as she progresses through learning spins, starting with a two-foot spin and moving to a sit spin and a Biellmann spin

The chart below shows the testing levels for each figure skating discipline for the standard track. Note that the lower-level tests are prerequisites for the next level. While this is true for the adult track as well, the test levels are a bit different. See the Adult Testing page for additional information about adult tests, including the testing level charts for the adult track.

Skating skills tests consist of four to six elements. The skater must skate all of the elements (usually consecutively) at the same test session in order to pass the skating skills test. In addition, the tests must be passed in the order shown. Rule 5011 of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook shows the complete list of prerequisites for each skating skills test.

Singles tests consist of a choreographed program and are usually performed to music. The only exception is the pre-preliminary test for which the skater has the option either to perform a choreographed program with music or simply perform the specified elements. The skater must pass the given skating skills level test in order to test the corresponding singles level. For example, the skater must pass the pre-bronze skating skills test before they may attempt the pre-bronze singles test. Rule 6211 of the U. S. Figure Skating Rulebook shows the complete list of prerequisites for each singles test.

Pair tests consist of a choreographed program and are performed with music. As with singles tests, the skater must pass the given skating skills level test before they may test the corresponding pair level. Rule 7211 of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook shows the complete list of prerequisites for each pair test.

Pattern dance tests can be taken either partnered or solo and consist of three or four individual dances. Note that the skater does not need to test all of the dances in a given level in the same test session. They will receive credit toward the completion of the test for the dances that they passed. However, the skater must pass all dances at any given level before they may test any dance at the next level.

Note that a skater may switch from partnered pattern dance to solo pattern dance at any level, but switching from solo pattern dance to partnered pattern dance requires the skater to begin again at the preliminary level, or whatever level they last completed partnered. Rule 8211 of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook shows the complete list of prerequisites for each partnered pattern dance test, while Rule 8214 of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook shows the same for each solo pattern dance test.

Solo pattern dance tests may be taken as either lead or follow. Generally, the male partner skates the lead pattern while the female partner skates follow. While both the lead and follow patterns are the same, for many dances they begin and end at a different point in the pattern.

Free dance tests can be taken either partnered or solo. Unlike all of the other disciplines, lower-level free dance tests are not prerequisites for higher-level free dance tests. Instead, the level of free dance test that a skater may take is determined solely by the level of pattern dance test they have passed.

Note that either partnered or solo pattern dance tests can act as used as prerequisites for solo free dance tests, but partnered free dance tests require the completion of partnered pattern dance tests. Rule 8311 of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook show the complete list of prerequisites for each partnered free dance test, while Rule 8361 of the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook shows the same for each solo free dance test.
