Music is a key component of both singles and pairs programs as well as ice dance. For singles and pairs, the selection helps convey the overall feel of the program. For ice dance, it sets the tone for the style and tempo of the dance. When competing, skaters may choose either a song or an instrumental piece to which they wish to skate. The only caveat here is for pattern dance. Each pattern dance has a specific beats per minute that must be adhered to, so while the skater may choose a song or instrumental piece, it must fit the required beats per minute. Note that those testing pattern dances on the standard track may not choose their music: they must use one of the six options provided by U.S. Figure Skating for each dance.
