There are two types of testing performed in U.S. Figure Skating: recreational and formal. Recreational testing is completed as part of the Learn to Skate program and is quite informal. Skaters wishing to become more serious in the sport can participate in formal testing which is done at club-offered test sessions and judged by U.S. Figure Skating officials. 

Learn to Skate level tests are completed during Learn to Skate classes and are not part of the judged system. These tests are used to advance skaters from one level to the next within LTS. These tests are not required for competitive skaters; however, some competitions that offer beginner-level events will use LTS levels to help group competitors.
