Most people who have enjoyed skating casually and decide they want to try it out more seriously begin by joining a Learn to Skate (LTS) USA program. This program offers a standardized curriculum designed to help skaters of all ages and abilities master the basics of skating. It includes specially designed pathways for preschoolers, kids, adults, and skaters with disabilities. This approach ensures that everyone can learn how to ice skate.

The South Charleston Memorial Ice Arena runs the Learn to Skate program. While many of the club’s coaches and skaters help teach these classes, CFSC has no official connection to the Learn to Skate program. The LTS information is provided here solely as a way to encourage and support participation in the sport of figure skating. Check out the SCMIA website for more information about the latest LTS session

Learn to Skate sessions generally run from early September through mid May. Each session is six weeks long with a choice between taking classes either on Saturday or Sunday. Saturday classes are in the morning from 11:00 to 12:00. Sunday classes are in the evening from 4:45 to 5:45. Each class lasts 60 minutes, with 30 minutes of group instructional time and 30 minutes of individual practice time.

A skater’s skill level and age determine which class they are in. Children aged six and under with no prior skating experience take Snowplow Sam classes. These classes are specifically for younger skaters, allowing them to build confidence on the ice through play. Once the skater passes all four levels of Snowplow Sam, they can move on to the basic skills classes.

Basic skills classes are designed for kids over the age of six who have no prior skating experience. Kids will work their way through six progressive levels of basic skills classes. This sequence allows them to learn the key fundamentals of ice skating. An instructor will asses kids who have some prior skating experience to determine at which level they should begin.

Adult classes are designed for both beginning and experienced adults and older teens. The six levels of adult classes teach proper skating technique while promoting physical fitness and helping to improve coordination and balance.

The skating instructors will test each skater during the last class of each session. Each instructor carries out the testing in an informal way and determines whether or not the skater is ready to advance to the next level. It’s important to keep in mind that everyone develops skills at their own pace. This means that it’s not uncommon for a skater to spend multiple sessions at the same level. The goal is to ensure that every skater develops a solid foundation, which cannot be rushed – and to have fun!

All Learn to Skate students also receive a pass for six free public skating sessions. Take advantage of these! There are public sessions every day after school and several on the weekends. The only way to improve skating skills is with practice!

The cost of the Learn to Skate sessions also includes a membership in Learn to Skate USA.

CFSC always invites skaters involved in Learn to Skate to participate in both our both Holiday Showcase and Spring Showcase as part of an LTS group number. In addition, skaters interested in competing are able to do so as LTS skaters, although this would require them to take private lessons with a coach. Visit our Coaches page for more information about our coaches and how to get in touch with them.
